Ian spoke with author and electronic gaming entrepreneur David Levy about his new book, Love + Sex with Robots, in which he explores how robots may one day participate in physical and emotional relationships with human beings.
In about 40 years, Levy explained, robots will be very similar to humans in their appearance and in the way they interact with us. These human-like machines will have powerful intellects, able to think, plan, and solve problems, as well as artificial skin and an array of electronic sensors that allow them to experience tactile sensations, he said. They will be programmed to feel and act like humans, and may initially appeal to people who have a difficult time with human relationships or those with negative personality traits.

Levy thinks humans will be able to readily adapt to having sexual relationships with robots. He pointed out that some men already purchase life-like sex dolls and a large percentage of woman use electronic devices for sexual stimulation. According to Levy, people will likely rent sex robots at first because of their high cost. He also discussed robotic therapists and how robots could one day be used to provide emotional and physical care for the elderly.

Ian, what is the most interesting thing you have learned from the people you have interviewed on Coast to Coast?

Never trust your first impression.

Ian, have you ever had a guest that you felt was holding back? Were you able to break through the crust and expose them?

You know, that's a tricky dance, really. I'm not sure that C2C functions best when it's an "expose" (with a French accent) kind of a show. That having been said, I think a recent ghost show was pretty self-revealing and didn't need much of my help.

What has been your most significant viewpoint change since your time on C2CAM?

Contrary to popular opinion, perhaps, I remain very open to good questions and sincere pursuits of answers. I haven't experienced any major shifts except for the simplicity of the JFK assassination conspiracy. I think we know the truth now and that was different from what I thought.

Ian, as a preacher, what's your take on EVPs and other evidence of life after death?

Good question. I haven't heard any convincing EVPs yet but as far as ghosts are concerned, the belief in ghosts does not violate my cosmology or theology at all.

Ian, a core group of us including me are trying to get George to run for the presidency in 2012, your thoughts? And if George does become President, would you want to be in charge with something and which department? I would put Art Bell in charge of the FCC and Lex in charge of the Internet.

I'm all for it. Talk show hosts should be running the free world, as far as I'm concerned. You've made good cabinet picks. I want to be Secretary of the Interior so that I can keep track of the Mole People, especially my arch-nemesis, King Goddard the Squinty.

I prepare all week which should tell you that I really suck at this.

Every Sunday as I greet people all robed up by the door, I get a lot of "Was I listening to you as I fell asleep last night?" kind of thing.

A couple. Besides being an involved father, I do a weekday morning show with my wife that runs five days a week. Then I do regular church duties. And currently I'm appearing in "High School Musical On Ice."

A few months ago you interviewed Maurice Cotterell, and weren't too happy about the fact that he wouldn't let you get a word in edge wise. I was kind of shocked by him... I've read one of his books, and think he's really interesting. But you really made me think twice... I appreciate that!

Thank you--he was probably the biggest regret I've had in the past year. Not for having him on but for the way he wanted me off. C2C is not a university extension service, it's a conversation and long may the Art Bell ring on that.

I liked the show you did where Fred Bell's pyramid kept falling off your head because of the headphones. You ought to try a head pyramid, seriously. It accumulates orgone. You know, razors stay sharper under a pyramid. He is a kind of mad genius.

I had that around here for years. Was it Fred Bell's? I thought it was somebody else's though. I used to make my kids wear them but they still couldn't remember to clean their room.
